ABSTRACT:
In light of the rising global trend in electronic cigarette (EC) usage, even among healthcare professionals, understanding their beliefs and attitudes toward EC is vital. This study assessed the prevalence of EC smoking among healthcare professionals in United Arab Emirates along with their beliefs and attitudes toward EC. The study utilized a descriptive, cross-sectional research design, employing an online survey to gather data. The questionnaire was distributed through multiple channels, including email and popular social media platforms. Out of 576 respondents to the online survey, 310 (53.8%) reported using EC. Friends/colleagues were the main source of information on EC for 373 participants (64.8%). Analysis indicated notable discrepancies in EC smoking prevalence across various participant demographics, such as age, gender, marital status, number of children, nationality, years of experience, shift duty, and use of other smoking methods. Further, many participants' responses to statements reflecting beliefs and attitudes significantly varied based on their EC smoking status. The study underscores the increasing prevalence of EC smoking among healthcare professionals and emphasizes the urgency of implementing targeted interventions to support cessation efforts for this hazardous form of smoking. These interventions must account for the diverse range of beliefs and attitudes influenced by individuals' smoking status.
