ABSTRACT:
Chamomile tea is one of the most widely used herbal teas in traditional medicine. Its benefits are attributed to the essential oil compounds, and flavonoids. In this study, commercial samples of chamomile tea were collected from local Syrian markets (X, Y, Z, and M) and evaluated according to Syrian and international standards. The methodology included organoleptic, microscopic, physical, and chemical examinations. The four samples were almost within the physical standards. Also, the moisture and ash content were within the standards. The best flavonoids content in the samples and their related antioxidant activity were in Y, Z, M and X, respectively. Although the yield of the extracted oil was acceptable, some samples lacked the characteristic blue color of chamomile oil. Pb and Ni were exceeded the maximum permitted levels in the samples, while, Hg was exceeded the maximum permitted level in sample M, and Fe was exceeded the maximum permitted level in both X and Y, and Cd was exceeded the maximum permitted level in X, Y and M samples. This study emphasizes the importance of systematic and periodic analysis of commercial herbal products to enhance consumer confidence and ensure their safety and therapeutic efficacy, without compromising the value of medicinal herbs as a preferred natural treatment option for a wide range of consumers.
