ABSTRACT:
This study presents the development and comprehensive characterization of eco-friendly grape seed oil microemulsions using green surfactant systems composed of sorbitan monooleate (SMO) and polysorbate surfactants. Grape seed oil was selected as the oil phase due to its exceptional composition, containing 62.246% linoleic acid and demonstrating superior quality parameters including low acid value (0.2) and peroxide value (1.3), making it ideal for topical delivery applications. Strategic hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) optimization across the range of 9.6-13.0 enabled successful formation of both oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions through systematic surfactant blend preparation. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams constructed via water titration method revealed extensive microemulsion regions, confirming thermodynamic stability across all formulations. Comprehensive characterization including particle size analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, pH determination, and stability assessment demonstrated that higher HLB values (11.7-13.0) yielded smaller particle sizes in O/W systems (73.8-174.2nm), while W/O systems maintained consistent dimensions (99.4-134.5nm). Electrical conductivity effectively distinguished O/W systems (176.3-241.2µS/cm) from W/O systems (71.76-87.34µS/cm). All twelve formulations exhibited outstanding stability under centrifugation testing and extended storage (30 days) with physiologically acceptable pH values (7.1-7.67) suitable for topical applications. The incorporation of biodegradable, naturally-derived ingredients align with green chemistry principles and addresses growing market demand for sustainable formulations. These microemulsion systems demonstrate significant potential as effective delivery platforms for bioactive compounds in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical applications, offering enhanced bioavailability, thermodynamic stability, and environmental sustainability compared to conventional synthetic systems.
