ABSTRACT:
Nitrate contamination of groundwater represents a critical global environmental issue, threatening human health and ecosystem stability. This study assesses the problem of nitrate pollution of borehole water in the Sidi Taibi region (Morocco), an area subject to increased pressure from intensive agriculture and rapid urbanization, significantly impacting groundwater resources. The main objective is to analyze the effectiveness of biological denitrification as a nitrate pollution mitigation technology in this context. The results of physicochemical analyses of groundwater from Sidi Taibi boreholes reveal nitrate concentrations exceeding Moroccan standards (with a 70% exceedance observed in borehole no. 10), underlining the imperative need for treatment intervention. Biological denitrification, a microbial process for reducing nitrates to nitrogen gas, is studied in detail, considering the key parameters influencing its performance, including carbonaceous substrate availability, initial nitrate concentration and inhibition by dissolved oxygen. This research highlights the potential of biological denitrification as a sustainable strategy for improving groundwater quality and protecting public health in Sidi Taibi. Nevertheless, it stresses the need for rigorous management and constant operational monitoring to optimize the performance of the process and overcome the constraints associated with its application.
