ABSTRACT:
Omitted Nursing Care poses significant challenges in ICU, impacting patient safety and nurses’ well-being. Nevertheless, there is a significant gap in the existing research about this phenomenon. This study investigated the phenomenon of omitted nursing care within the context of Jordanian ICUs. Employing a descriptive correlational design, the study sampled 150 registered nurses from four Jordanian hospitals. Participants completed the ICU Omitted Nursing Care instrument (ICU-ONC). Participants reported a mean of omitted nursing care score of 1.15 out of 4 (SD = 0.736), indicating a rare incidence of omission. Additionally, the study revealed that tasks like mobilization every two hours, pain assessment in non-communicative patients, communicate preoccupations to the medical team. Conversely, tasks involving nursing oversight, such as timely medication administration, cardiac monitoring, rapid intervention for glucose levels, and response to alarms indicating potential instability, were less frequently omitted. Finally, omitted nursing care was influenced by demographic characteristics such as hospital types and additional jobs. The study underscores the need for interventions to mitigate omitted nursing care, including optimizing nurse: patient ratios and providing continuous training to enhance nurses' skills and time management. Addressing nurses’ fatigue and retention is crucial, especially amidst global nursing shortages exacerbated by events like the COVID-19 pandemic.
