ABSTRACT:
In this work, we present a summary of the synthesis and characterization of Super-Paramagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) and their behavior in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, we have used various characterization techniques to understand the surface morphology as well as magnetic properties. These nanoparticles were coated with Ascorbic acid (AA) and the synthesized formulation was used in the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). In vitro dissolution studies indicated the better release of AA as compared to the marketed formulation. Iron content assay was performed through UV-visible spectroscopy to determine the percentage of iron in the formulation. Furthermore, stability studies were also conducted to clearly understand the application aspect of the formulation. Finally, in vivo studies were performed and various biochemical parameters were closely observed and statistically analyzed. Histopathological studies were also performed on the isolated spleen tissues of the Wistar rats. The results presented that the iron uptake increased significantly in Wistar rats, due to the nano-sized particles and the coating of AA. It is shown that AA significantly improved the absorption of iron in the body, thereby aiding in reduced dose and better therapeutic efficacy.
