ABSTRACT:
Solid Lipid nanoparticles are considered to be colloidal systems comprising of lipids, stabilizers and coating materials having a particle size range of 10-1000 nm and are in a spherical shape. They have wide range of applications in the health sector since they are physiologically similar to the body lipids. By appropriate surface modification of the solid lipid nanoparticles, they can be targeted to various organs of the body such as tumours, lungs, brain, liver, and spleen. They are available as oral, parenteral, nasal, pulmonary and ophthalmic dosage forms. As there is a lot of scope in the solid lipid nanoparticles, there is wide research going on in the pharmaceutical industry. Though the SLN offers many advantages as a DDS, its scale-up and manufacturing are equally challenging. The review is aimed discussing various methods of formulation, manufacturing and the challenges that are faced in fabrication of SLN. It also speaks about the regulatory aspects of SLN according to USFDA and CDSCO.
