ABSTRACT:
This prospective observational study was carried out to assess the antibiotic resistance pattern in uropathogens at a tertiary care hospital. The duration of the study was for 7 months. Adult Inpatients in Medicine ward with urinary tract infection prescribed with were included in the study. A total of 150 patients were included in the study out of which 59.33% were females and 40.66% were males. The mean age of total patients was found to be 54.30±17.39 years, the mean age female patients was found to be 53.76±18.24 years and the mean age of male patients was found to be 58.55±14.33. In culture positive patients 52.94% of patients had E.coli as causative organism. Klebsiella pneumonia was the next common uropathogen (17.64%). Dysuria was found to be the most common presenting symptom (40.66%). Females and geriatrics populations are vulnerable to UTI when compared to males and other age groups. E.coli and other isolates were more sensitive to Ertapenem, Amikacin and Nitrofurantoin these can be drugs of choice for the treatment of UTIs in our region. And there was an increase in resistance with routinely used drugs like cephalosporins and fluroquinolones hence these drugs should not be considered as first-line therapy.
