ABSTRACT:
Adequate mechanical preparation, copious and effective irrigation, and intracanal medications are used to eliminate the bacteria and their products are required for successful root canal treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding chitosan nanoparticles (CNPS) on the antimicrobial activity of Glyde gel. Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus in planktonic forms were treated with five different irrigants, GI: Glyde gel alone, GII: experimental gel (2:1 Glyde-CNPs, GIII: NaOCl gel 5.25%, GIV: NaOCl gel 2%, and GV: saline alone as a control. The CNPS was added to Glyde gel in concentration of 10gm/L-1 and used as experimental group. The treated bacteria were quantified by using inhibition zone method. All groups (except saline group) were able to significantly reduce the Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus (P> 0.05). However, the bacterial reduction was significantly improved when CNPS were incorporated into the Glyde gel (P > 0.05). The inhibition zone was significantly increased in 5.25% NaOCl group when used and was significantly different from 2% NaOCl group. The antibacterial activity of Glyde gel was significantly increased when adding CNPS. This could potentially be beneficial when using as a biomechanical material during preparation of the canal as lubricant and enhancement of antibacterial activity.
