ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a disease characterised by inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth. It occurs when the gingivitis is left untreated which leads to periodontitis. Gingivitis is caused by inadequate oral hygiene which causes accumulation of plaque. This review was done to see the association between sleep and periodontitis. Disturbed sleep or insomnia affects a lot of people in the world. It may be due to various reasons such as anxiety, medication, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, depression, hormone imbalance, obstructive sleep apnea and other chronic illnesses. This systematic review was done to assess the association between sleep and periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was done in electronic database like PubMed using various search terms like “chronic periodontitis”, “generalised chronic periodontitis”, “localised chronic periodontitis”, “gum disease”, “clinical loss of attachment”, “alveolar bone loss”, “sleep”, “sleep quality”, “insomnia”, “sleeplessness”. The reviewer then narrowed down the article search according to the inclusion criteria and only articles in English language were included. RESULTS: Based on the results that were obtained from the present systematic review, it can be concluded that sleep is associated with periodontitis. CONCLUSION: There are a lot of sleep parameters which are associated with periodontal parameters which confirms the association between both.
