ABSTRACT:
Background and Aim: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. Caralluma fimbriata is an Indian herb which was proven to have cytotoxic properties against human colon cancer cell lines. On the light of this information, the present study was designed to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of C.fimbriata against commercially available oral cancer cell line. Materials and Method: MTT cell viability assay was performed on KB cell lines which was treated with increasing concentrations of ethanolic extract of C.fimbriata for a period of 24 hours. Cyclophosphomide was used as the positive control for analysing the result. Result: The viability of the cells at maximum concentration was found to be 28.47 % whereas the control showed 21.87 % cell viability. The ethanolic extract of C.fimbriata showed a dose dependent cytotoxicity with a maximum toxicity of 71.52 % at the maximum concentration used in the study. The Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) value of ethanolic extract of C.fimbriata was found to be 28.39 µg/mL. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of C. fimbriata demonstrated to have good antiproliferative activity against KB mouth cell line. Hence, it may be used for the management of oral cancer after evaluating the practical applicability and clinical efficacy of this drug.
