ABSTRACT:
Periodontitis is a chronic infection of the connective tissue and destroys the underlying alveolar bone. Risk factors for the periodontitis includes Gingivitis, Poor oral health habits, Smoking or tobacco, Older age, Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or menopause, Obesity, Vitamin C deficiency, Genetics, Conditions that cause decreased immunity, such as leukemia, HIV/AIDS and cancer treatment, Diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. Since smoking is a risk factor for periodontitis, in this review we are discussing about the effect of smoking on interleukin and reactive oxygen species.
