ABSTRACT:
Cannabis speciesis widely distributed in the Punjab region. To examine allelopathic effects of Cannabis on germination and seedling growth of Cicerarietinum, an experiment was performed both in laboratory conditions as well as in outdoor conditions. Treatments were set up in three replicates. In both conditions different concentrations (25,50,75,100%) of root and shoot aqueous extracts of Cannabis were provided. Control was treated with distilled water. During the germination assay shoot and root lengths were measured and compared with control. Results obtained revealed that in germination assay shoot extract and root extract in very low concentration has no effect on seedling growth however higher concentrations of both extracts slower down the germination rate as well as affects shoot length of Cicerarietinum seedlings. In foliar spray, reduced chlorophyll, NR activity and total protein content were observed in higher aqueous extract concentrations of both root and shoot. However results of NR activity and total protein content were more pronounced in case of shoot extract treated plants.
