ABSTRACT:
A study on the antimicrobial effect of Ailanthus triphysa was carried out against bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli by adopting broth dilution method. Ethanolic extract of the drug at a concentration of 125 µg/ml showed higher level of inhibitory activity on P. aeruginosa (OD-0.250±0.011). At the same time, a concentration of 500 µg/ml exhibited remarkable activity against S.aureus (0.254±0.006). Least effect was on E.coli and S. pyogenes (0.343±0.011 & 0.675±0.026). Hence, A.triphysa can be used as an effective antibacterial drug against S. aureus and P.aeruginosa.
