ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: The objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of kinesio taping on balance and functional performance in subjects with plantar fasciitis. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY: Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain which affects both males and females. It is defined as the inflammation of the plantar fascia which forms the protective covering layer of the sole of the foot. It can affect both sedentary and athletic population and also in subjects those who stand for a prolonged period. METHODOLOGY: This study was an experimental study. Forty subjects were randomly allocated into two groups – Taping and control groups. The taping group (KT group) consisted of 20 subjects and intervened with the application of kinesio tape (K tape). The control group consisted of 20 subjects and plantar fascia and calf stretching exercises were given during the treatment period. The treatment duration lasted for 2 weeks. The outcome measures used were Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) and Star Excursion Balance Test [SEBT]. Both male and female subjects in the age group of 40 to 60 years, subjects presenting with the symptoms of plantar fasciitis for more than 6 months were included. Subjects having recent lower limb fractures, any neurological deficit, calcaneal spur, lower limb deformities, limb length discrepancy were excluded from this study. The study was carried out in the Faculty of Physiotherapy, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute. RESULT: The present study shows that the experimental group had a significant improvement in functional performance and dynamic balance when compared to the control group (P=0.001).
