ABSTRACT:
Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical, gaseous multifunctional messenger molecule in plants. NO regulates plant growth and development, including seed dormancy, seed germination, primary and lateral root growth, flowering, fruit ripening, gravitropism, photosynthesis, senescence, programmed cell death, pathogen attack, herbicides, abiotic and biotic stress responses. The present study was conducted to show influence of different concentrations of NO donor Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on growth and antioxidant system in germinating pea seedlings grown hydroponically. The seedlings were irrigated with 15 ml of solution of different concentrations of 25-500µM SNP. Results showed that protein content and antioxidative enzymes like catalase and peroxidase activity was enhanced but Proline and MDA content was reduced at 50 µM SNP. With an increase in SNP concentration protein content and antioxidative enzyme activity was reduced significantly, and MDA and proline content increased significantly. These data demonstrated the dual nature of NO on plants.
