ABSTRACT:
The study was conducted on 60 patients infected with amoebiasis disease and 30 healthy male as control group whom have visited hospitals Laboratory in Al-Najaf Governorate during the period from November 2015 to May, 2016. It is designed to determine the effects of Entamoeba histolytica infection on some parameters such as melatonin, leptin, iron and Lactoferrin concentration. The results proved significant increased (P < 0.05) in serummelatonin concentration in patients with amoebiasis as compared to control group, while significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the serumleptin, iron and Lactoferrin levels in patients with amoebiasis as compared to the control group.
CONCLUSIONS: The current study revealed high serum levels of melatonin in patients infected with E. histolytica, while low serum level of iron, Lactoferrin and leptin in patients with this parasite in compared with the control group. These results advocate a positive correlation between phagocytosis action and melatonin level in patients infected with E. histolytica parasite and the reason of decrease serum levels of leptin in patients infected with E. histolytica due to effects of early iron deficiency on the dopamine system and due to effects occur in receptor of leptin by this parasite.
