ABSTRACT:
The current study was carried out to evaluate the protective effect of P. guajava and its isolated fraction on CCl4 induced oxidative stress. Silymarin used as a standard drug for this study. The abnormalities of lipid peroxidative markers, enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidants were assessed in both plasma and liver tissue. The values of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), lipid peroxides (LPO) and conjugated dienes (CDs) were increased, the values of enzymatic antioxidants includes super oxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), Glutathione peroxides (GPx) and non enzymatic antioxidants includes vitamin C, Vitamin E and reduced glutathione (GSH) were decreased in CCl4 induced rats. The treatment of P. guajava (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg, bw) and isolated fraction (20 mg/kg, bw) doses decreased the elevated levels of all these parameters and restored significantly. From this study, it can be concluded that the ethanolic leaf extract of P. guajava and its isolated fraction showed significant antioxidative action in CCl4 induced oxidative stress.
