ABSTRACT:
The effect of the decoction of the traditional herbal formulation Aavarai Kudineer Chooranam (AKC) on glucose uptake was studied in rat skeletal muscle cells (L6) involved in glucose utilization. AKC is an antidiabetic siddha polyherbal formulation being used in the Indian system of medicine. This study also evaluated the cytotoxicity of the test substance by MTT assay. The test substance did not show any cytotoxicity. The results illustrated that the herbal decoction exhibited dose dependent glucose uptake by 45.59±2.46 and 24.99±2.40% at the concentration of 500 and 250 µg/ml respectively over control. Hence, it was concluded that the herbal decoction activate glucose uptake in L6 cell line of rat skeletal muscles.
