ABSTRACT:
Bacterial enzymes play an important role in the industry. The objective of this study was to isolate and screen a-amylase producing bacteria from water samples obtained from various regions of the Naini Lake, Uttarakhand, India. A total of 11 bacterial isolates were obtained on nutrient agar medium, which were then screened for the production of a-amylase. Antioxidant and anti-fungal property of the bacterial isolates which tested positive for a-amylase production was also assessed. Bacterial isolates NLWS 5 and NLWS 7 showed the highest enzyme production with a zone of 14mm and 10mm respectively. These two strains showed anti-oxidant as well as anti-fungal activity which were then selected for identification using Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Microbiology. It was found that the bacterial isolates which showed the highest amount of a-amylase production, anti-oxidant and anti-fungal activity belonged to Corynebacterium sp.
