ABSTRACT:
Cinnamomum malabatrum (Lauraceae) is a small, tropical tree which grows up to 15m height. The bark, leaf, berries etc are aromatic in nature due to the presence of volatile oil content in it. The main aim of this study is to carry out the GCMS analysis of the bark essential oil and carefully do a analytical work which is used to find out different individual components in the bark oil. This is possible by finding out the Peak area of the individual components obtained by the difference in the retention time in the gas chromatogram. The individual components were identified by comparison with using database stored in the Wiley275 and NIST05a search libraries and by matching the mass spectral data with those published in it. For the present study, bark from the young tree is collected and it is dried in the temperature below 50° C, and it is committed in pulverizer. The size reduced bark is used for isolating essential oil by using Clevenger’s apparatus based on the principle of hydrodistillation. GCMS analysis of the bark oil, subsequent database matches and interpretation of spectra resulted in the identification of about 98.3% of total constituents and 61 individual components. The major components of the oil were Limonene (6.91%), Linalool (68.21%), Camphene (1.59%), Geraniol (2.11%), Eugenol (1.39%), Myristaldehyde (2.69%) etc.
