Sustained release is providing promising method to be able to decrease the unwanted effects of drugs by preventing the fluctuation of the therapeutic concentration of the drugs in the body. The aim of current study was to design and characterization of sustained release matrix tablets of Acyclovir by using Hydroxylpropylmethylcellulose (HPMC K100M, K15M, K4M) and Sodium Alginate, by direct compression method. The matrix tablets were then evaluated for various physical tests like, Thickness, Uniformity of weight, hardness, friability, drug content and in vitro drug release. The calculated regression coefficient has shown higher r2 values with zero order kinetics and higuchi kinetics. The ā€˜nā€™ values of most of the formulations has shown non-fickian diffusion.
